MUSIC & FILM PROJECT
The Film & TV/Streaming Series Industry in New York City is booming. All that content needs music. Budgeted productions want distinctive original music - not downloads from libraries everyone uses.

COMPOSER-MUSICIANS
HAVE NEVER HAD THEIR MUSIC
PUT TO A FILM
(Not even a low/no budget short film)
Musicians depend on local jobs (i.e. teaching lessons, weddings, playing in bars and clubs, music at churches, etc.) that often grow out of word-of-mouth marketing. These jobs can be here and there, and not give Musicians opportunity to fully express their creativity.
It's easy now to self-produce a recording of your own Music, but it's not easy to get it widely heard or to make $ from it. When Musicians think of Film they don't see it as a new opportunity. Mostly they see it as a very daunting and mysterious world, with no clear starting place.
MUSIC & FILM PROJECT
Composer-Musicians can sign up on our Artists Resource Directory for the opportunity to work with a Team from the Challenge as the Teams produce their short films.
In addition to offering a consultation, Musicians agree to offer one-time use (keeping all other rights) of one of their songs for use in the Team's short film. It can be a song from the Musician's catalog of already published songs or music composed specially for the short film.
Even if a Musician is not chosen by a Team, their music will be showcased on this site for Filmmakers looking independently for Music.
In addition our site Q & A Blog will feature discussions about Music and Film and links to other resources.

MUSIC & FILM
(UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE)
The videos and article below use scenes from famous Films to blow your mind with how Music can shape and increase the power of the visual !
1) 'How Film Scores Play With Our Brains' (11 min)
2) 'Seven Ways to Use Music to Create Mood and Meaning Onscreen' (Article w/links to Film clips)
3) In 'How Music Can Change a Film' (3 min), a boat scene from 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' is shown with its original Music -- then backed by (3) different types of Music. Witness how each type of music completely changes the mood / meaning of the scene!
PUTTING MUSIC TO FILM
Exercise
If you want to try yourself to use Music to transform Film, simply take a (1) minute clip of something you shot -- it can be family, a performance, anything you were looking at -- then set it to at least (2) very different types of Music!
One really startling thing you might learn is that Music you never liked listening to in everyday life, you now enjoy matching that Music to Film!
Start noticing soundtrack Music as you watch Films / Series -- especially the opening and closing title sequences. Remember even a (4) minute short film might use two or more types of music (if the visuals and story justify it).

Interested in the technical of how to match Music -- beat to frame - to Film?
In the video the Filmmaker uses a silent (1) minute short film he created (with clips of shots from various locations) to demonstrate how he selects and lays Music to help create a story for his contrasting visuals.
